When Barcodes Are Already Enough

Before comparing tag technologies, it's worth saying plainly: for most manufacturing teams, a printed barcode label and a phone camera or USB scanner is already a complete, reliable answer. Barcodes are cheap, universally supported, require no special phone hardware, and work identically on Android, iPhone, and desktop. If your current scanning workflow isn't causing friction, there's no obligation to add anything on top of it — NFC and RFID are enhancements for specific situations, not a replacement barcodes need.

The situations where they earn their keep are narrower than the marketing around them suggests, which is exactly why it's worth being specific about what each one actually does.

What NFC Tapping Actually Adds — and Where It Doesn't Work

NFC's real advantage over a barcode is aim. Scanning a barcode means getting a camera lens lined up with a label, which is awkward on equipment mounted at odd angles, mid-height on a shelf, or crammed behind other items. Tapping an NFC tag just means touching a phone to roughly the right spot — no aiming, no lighting, no "hold still while the camera focuses."

That advantage comes with a real platform limitation, and it's worth stating exactly rather than glossing over: Web NFC — in-app tag reading — works on Android only, specifically Chrome on Android (including Nstock's installable Android app). There is no equivalent for iPhone; iOS Safari doesn't support in-app NFC reading, full stop, and no amount of app configuration changes that.

Nstock's answer for iPhone is a different mechanism, not a workaround pretending to be the same thing: every NFC tag Nstock encodes is written as a standard URL record, not app-specific data. iPhones have native background NFC tag reading built into iOS itself — when you tap a tag carrying a URL, the phone opens that link automatically, no app required. RFID gets pitched as exotic integration work; in practice, the UHF RFID guns and handheld readers used in most warehouses are keyboard-wedge devices — they type the scanned code directly into whatever text field currently has focus, exactly like a USB barcode scanner does. That means an RFID gun works at any of Nstock's existing scan inputs, desktop or mobile web, with no API integration, no special setup, and no configuration on Nstock's side. If your reader already outputs a code as keystrokes, it works the moment you point it at a tag and the corresponding field is focused.

Where an RFID gun earns its cost over a barcode scanner is volume and speed: a handheld UHF reader can pick up a tag's ID from several feet away without direct line of sight, which matters when you're doing a rapid audit pass across a rack of tagged equipment rather than walking up to and aiming at each item individually. For a small equipment list, that speed advantage rarely justifies the reader's cost. For a larger asset base where audits eat a meaningful chunk of someone's day, it can.

Cost Reality: Commodity Stickers, Not a Hardware Investment

The tag itself is the cheap part. Blank NFC stickers (commonly NTAG213 or NTAG215 chips) are a commodity product — typically a few cents to under a dollar apiece in bulk, though exact pricing varies by vendor, chip type, and order quantity, so check current supplier pricing rather than treating any number here as fixed. Encoding one for an asset in Nstock is a matter of tapping a blank tag against your phone from that asset's lookup screen; there's no per-tag licensing cost or proprietary hardware requirement on Nstock's side.

RFID is the piece with a real hardware decision behind it. Handheld UHF readers and gun-style scanners range widely in price depending on read range, ruggedness, and whether you're buying a dedicated device or a sled attachment for an existing phone. That's a purchase worth sizing to actual need — how many assets, how often you audit, how large the space is — rather than buying up front on the assumption it'll obviously pay for itself.

How Nstock Supports Each, Today

  • Android, in-app NFC tap — available on Asset Inventory's Lookup and Audit modes and on the general mobile scan page, feeding the same lookup, audit-scan, or search flow a camera scan would. Requires no separate setup beyond having NFC enabled on the phone; the tap option only appears when the browser supports it.
  • NFC tag encoding — from an asset's lookup screen (with edit permission), write that asset's link to a blank tag directly from the app. From that point on, the tag works everywhere, not just on Android.
  • iPhone smart-link tapping — encoded tags are standard URL records, so tapping one on iPhone opens the link through iOS's native background tag reading, resolving to the matching asset (through a sign-in prompt first, if needed).
  • RFID guns and USB barcode scanners — keyboard-wedge input at every scan box in Nstock, desktop or mobile, no integration required.

A reasonable default: start with barcodes, since they cost the least, need no new hardware, and work identically for everyone on the team regardless of phone. Layer in NFC tapping if your team is Android-heavy and doing enough asset lookups or audit scans that skipping the camera-aim step adds up over a week. Only add an RFID gun if you're running audits across enough equipment, often enough, that scanning items individually is a real time cost — not because RFID sounds more advanced than a barcode.

None of these are mutually exclusive in Nstock. The same asset can carry a printed barcode and an encoded NFC tag; the same scan input accepts a camera-read barcode, an NFC tap, or an RFID gun's keystrokes interchangeably. Pick whichever combination matches how your team actually moves through the building, and add the others only when a specific bottleneck justifies it.
